...if you're gonna write fic for native-English-speaking communities, make sure: a) your command of the English language is sufficient unto the task: yes, I know, it's a language of contradictions and full of grammatical potholes, but still an' all, an ability to use adjectives and apostrophes!!! correctly would be good; and b) you can switch between Brit- and Yank-speak depending on WHAT you're writing. This means that if you're writing for a Brit-based fandom, go into your Word preferences and set the default spelling to UK English NOT US English. It's not hard. If you're not native ES and you're winging it, find a Beta-reader who can keep you on the straight and narrow and bloody deal with the corrections. What brought this mini-rant on? Simple. I've given up reading fic of any persuasion because I just can't get past bad spelling and/or grammar to get to the meat of what are - quite often - good stories. All it takes is a shudderingly bad tense error in the precis to send me screaming to my bookcase for a dose of Robert Jordan, Bernard Cornwell or Roger Zelazny. Please. If you watch the shows, surely you must have an understanding of how the characters live and talk. Crossing the pond writing-wise is not that hard. Deal with it. I feel: grumpy
